The small addition to the Rowley Victorian is clad on the outside with red cedar clapboards hand nailed to match the rest of the house. Tim Berky shows Bob how he created a story pole to match the exact placement of existing clapboards even with the 1 5/8 inch difference from settling. Inside, homeowner David Masher walks Bob through the completed interior demolition, which included the removal of a chimney stack that went through all floors of the home to vent heating stoves. Masher also shows Bob the structural steel beam in the main area where the dining-room wall was removed. With rough construction complete, the insulation crew is ready to spray NCFI polyurethane insulation with Honeywell's Enovate technology to fill the wall cavities with 3 to 3 ˝ inches of expanding foam that sets up as rigid insulation to create a moisture, air, and vapor barrier and insulates to a factor of R21. Jim Remick of Nickerson-Remick insulation contractors joins Bob for the spraying, showing how wires, pipes, and boxes can be buried in the foam for total insulation. Outside, Berky creates custom backerboard and frieze molding that matches the original molding profile of the 125 year-old home.
