Deck Framing and Artisanal Tiles (BV0119)

Bob is in Rowley with Rick Kleiner of the Southern Forest Products Association to talk about current methods for pressure-treating lumber for insect and moisture protection. Since chromated copper arsenate or CCA was pulled from the market, copper azol and alkaline copper quaternary – ACQ – have become the leading preservatives in the industry. Code requires pressure-treated pine for structural use to prevent deck failure. Kleiner explains the labels that denote above-ground or below-ground use marked on each piece. Tim Berky and his crew use the lumber to construct the rim joist and ledger board that are set tight into the house and backed with ice and water shield to prevent water penetration and damage to the home. Water will shed off deck members that are pitched away from the house. Deck supports and beams are constructed before the joists are toe-nailed in place and set with joist hangers for maximum support. Inside, homeowner Jeanne Sanviti-Masher is with Steve Powers of Trikeenan artisanal tiles of Keene, New Hampshire, to look at the layout and installation of these hand-crafted tiles. Tiler David Cloutman lays a design of Sharkskin field tiles, hand-stamped accents, and pencil tiles according to the layout developed by Sanviti-Masher.
