Paul Mackie of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association joins Bob to discuss the stability, durability, rot and insect resistance of this wood, while contractor Tim Berky creates a mitered edge-board to face the end grain. Berky hand drives stainless-steel, self-tapping, square-head screws into the decking for a solid installation that will not pull up. On the roof, Rich Melo of Newton Roofing Company installs an Atas standing-seam copper roof that arrives as prefabricated 16-ounce interlocking copper panels that are clipped onto galvanized fasteners attached to the roof. The roof hips arrive prefabricated according to roof dimensions and ready-to-install. A copper roof will weather to a green patina over 10 years and last from 50 to 100 years. Inside, Ryan Pirro of RetorationWindows.com refurbishes the old double-sash windows with solid bronze sash chains, new rot-resistant parting bead, and spring-bronze weather stripping for easy operation and energy efficiency. For one-fourth the cost of replacement windows, energy-efficient, easy-operation, true divided-lite windows can be refurbished. Outside, Berky finishes the oriel windows with copper flashing, medium-density overlay – MDO – and mitered trim.
