Contractor Tim Berky installs Merillat cherry cabinets in the new kitchen of the Rowley Victorian. Bob remarks on Merillat’s compression system, which prevent slamming drawers and pinched fingers. These cabinets feature solid cherry doors with pressboard boxes, gusseted corners for strength, and dovetailed drawers. Berky attaches the cabinets along pre-marked stud lines after roughing them, adding 1/8-inch shims where necessary, and checking for level. He then assembles the kitchen island to look like an Italianate table with legs attached to rails and fixed to the floor. The curved retaining walls from the deck to the yard are being faced in cultured stone, an Owens Corning stone-look product of Portland cement, pumice, and iron oxides for color. Cultured stone is one-third the weight and one-half the cost of a stone installation, has flat backs for easy mortaring, and 90 degree returns for ready-made corners. Cultured Stone’s variety of stones and colors allows masons to leave a unique imprint and design on each job. Bob closes with Berky who is installing the western red cedar posts and rail sections for the deck, which he builds on site and screws into place for a gorgeous outdoor space.
