Bob and Ronald Boyajian of California Paints discuss the best way to paint this 100 year-old wooden, clapboard structure. Boyajian uses a moisture meter to check the wood for moisture content, which dictates the correct paint to use. He recommends a primer for all bare wood, especially on the new cedar claps that bleed tannic acid and can stain the paint. The painters hand brush linseed-oil-based, tinted primer onto the butts of the clapboards and then the faces, working one section at a time. For a finish coat, they use California Paints quick-drying Velvet Flat, which is 100 percent acrylic with a high permeability rating to let the paint breathe. In the garden, Ruth Foster shows Bob how she plants the Dutch Gardens scylla and alium bulbs in bouquets for a lush effect. She reseeds the compacted lawn with a perennial rye, blue grass, and fescue mix for a “freedom lawn” that is overseeded twice per year and left to grow freely. The banked area off the deck has salvaged granite curbs for steps and evergreen varieties like yews for color. A batch composter will turn household vegetable and lawn refuse into rich food for the lawn and gardens.
