Bob joins Steve Forman of Redi-Exit and contractor Tim Berky for the installation of the aluminum fire escape. Forman points to the high death rate from fires in the United States, because secondary exits are not required in bedrooms. The Redi-Exit is easily installed, weather-proof, can hold up to 800 pounds, has a latching mechanism to prevent easy access to upper floors, and can be installed for around $1,100. Inside, Bob meets with AJ Paron-Wildes of Bellacor.com, the Internet lighting experts, about fixtures selected for the dining room, kitchen, bath, hallway, and deck. Paron-Wildes says aesthetics—like brushed nickel or copper finishes—and functionality—for task lighting, pathway finding, and security—are the two top concerns when selecting lighting. She reviews the new fixtures and the height at which each should hang to cast appropriate light. Bob and Berky close with the installation of a cherry veneer, solid-core door from Woodport. Berky uses a Hinge Mate from Precision Tools to cut the mortise for the door hinge, then a jig to cut the mortise on the jamb. Oil-rubbed bronze, reproduction hardware from the House of Antique Hardware is used on knobs, handles, pulls, and hinges throughout.
