Bob reviews the Bartlett Park container house project to date, including the foundation poured to receive four converted shipping containers that will frame the new house. Bill York and Rob Davis from FLASH—the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes – then join Bob to explain how a truss-roof system is bolted, tied down, nailed, and glued to the steel frame for a hurricane-resistant roof that can withstand winds of 140 miles per hour without failure. PGT Winguard impact-resistant windows are installed by Stephen Hugh of Clearwater Window and Door Installation who seals the surrounding joints with a self-adhering membrane to prevent water intrusion and then nails the frame into a factory-set pressure-treated window buck. Dave Olmstead of PGT Industries explains the thermal efficiency of these low-e coated, laminated, double-pane windows that are built to withstand impact and prevent building failure in winds up to 146 miles per hour. Bob visits St. Petersburg’s historic neighborhoods, homes, and history, its outstanding park system, vibrant downtown, and beautiful Tampa Bay. He closes with Kelly Cafarelli of the Home Depot Foundation and Todd Pittman of NeighborWorks who together are helping Bartlett Park build efficient, affordable homes in a sustainable neighborhood of first-time homebuyers.
