Bob reviews the progress and story behind the container-built home they are constructing in St. Petersburg, Florida, with the help of St. Petersburg Neighborhood Housing Services, NeighborWorks, and the Home Depot Foundation. Bob watches Derek Mercer and Delwin Carter of Tampa Armature Works (TAW) finish the exterior skin of the new front wall by welding 16 gauge sheet metal to the steel framing strips and stitch-welding them from inside to prevent buckling in high winds. Ty Moses fills the weld points and seams with body filler and primes the surface with a latex, galvanized-metal primer. After two to three hours, Moses sprays on an elastomeric stucco coating, and will finish it with SuperTherm insulating ceramic paint. Leslie Chapman-Henderson from FLASH reviews the Blueprint for Safety building guidelines with Bob and presents him with the Governor’s Hurricane Conference award for his dedication to promoting best building practices for a safer Florida. Chapman-Henderson tells Bob about the My Safe Florida Home to aid Florida’s low- and modest-income residents as they make safety upgrades to their homes. Bob closes with architect and designer Steve Armstrong who explains the strength of this steel structure and the layout flexibility of its interior space and David Cross who shows design possibilities for container-built homes.
