This on-demand hot-water system will furnish a household with hot water for three bathrooms, cooking, and laundry from a wall-mounted, sealed-combustion unit.

Basement Waterproofing, New Plumbing, and On-Demand Hot Water (BV0210)
In Melrose, basement waterproofing continues with exterior water diverters to take surface water away from the home and interior perimeter drainage to take water from wall barriers through an enclosed drainage pipe to the sump pump and out of the house. The sump system has three pumps to handle increased capacity or power failure, a sealed top with a perforated drain to handle plumbing leaks, and an alarm system to alert homeowners that battery backup has been initiated. Outside, special fittings allow water discharge even if underground discharge pipes are frozen. Union plumber Al Leone works with an apprentice to replace the old cast-iron stack and brass pipes with PEX tubing that is rated for plumbing and heating, and raises the plumbing lines for clearance in the basement. He shows how new lines are attached with stainless-steel fittings and neoprene seals, and how joints are packed tight using oakum and liquid lead. A Rinnai 5.3 gallon-per-minute whole-house water heater is also installed. Bob sees how the water enters the system, is heated, and air exchange for combustion air and venting is supplied through zero-clearance PVC piping resulting in a 40 percent savings in energy costs over tank-heated water systems.
