Building an Addition for an Elderly Parent Project

Innovative Concrete Forms and Wetland Protection (BV0221) Bob kicks off a new addition for an aging parent that will nearly double the size of this Norwell, Massachusetts, colonial and showcase concrete building technology that is streamlined, efficient, and versatile. There were some delays in obtaining a building permit because the home is near a quaking bog that serves as a wildlife habitat and natural filtration system for the town’s storm-water runoff. The bog was formed by melting glacial remains and covered by a moss layer that has since formed a 20-foot thick fibrous mat in Black Pond Bog. At the home site, a hay-bale buffer was created on the property to protect a connected wetland from erosion or runoff during the project. Homeowner Howard Brickman shows Bob how innovative plastic footing forms are set in place, lined, and braced for the concrete pour. The forms will stay in place and serve as the drainage channel for the foundation, saving multiple steps and much time after the footings are poured. The slab and footings will be poured in a monolithic, single pour using lightweight, web-reinforced polystyrene forms with rebar that will support the haunched slab. An insulated vapor barrier with reflective backing rolls down over the stone in preparation for the pour. At every step, time and materials savings speed the construction and save countless hours of labor.
