Building an Addition for an Elderly Parent Project

Installing Garage Doors, Framing the Interior, and Upper-Floor Decking (BV0223) Bob is on site at the Norwell, Massachusetts, home where insulated, steel garage doors are being installed to replace the original, low-budget fiberboard doors. Bob takes us through the replacement of the panels, tracks, springs, and hardware on these energy-efficient doors that are sealed to prevent against water intrusion. He then walks through the new insulated concrete addition with homeowner Howard Brickman, who explains the layout of this in-law addition that effectively doubles the size of the existing home. They talk about the concrete construction, how quickly it went up, and how insulated concrete form (ICF) construction allowed them to get a basement and slab, full upper story, walls, and first floor poured for nearly the same amount of concrete as a traditional basement wall-and-slab design. This house is all about innovative techniques and improved building practices, like the stay-in-place forms for the footings, the under-slab insulation and vapor barrier, the engineered lumber for I-joists and rafters, and the innovative DryPly decking being used for the second floor. Designed to withstand the weather for up to one month until the house is completely closed in, this Southern yellow pine floor decking is water-proof, thick, strong, and smooth-faced so that it can receive finish flooring without the added expense or labor required for an additional subfloor. The decking fits together with a tongue-and-groove design and is held in place with a solvent-free, water-reactive polyurethane foam that sets using moisture from the air. The adhesive foam is free of the agents that cause most construction adhesives to eat away at sheathing or decking, compromising its insulative value and impermeability.
