Building an Addition for an Elderly Parent Project
Installing the Cellular PVC Trim on the New Addition VideoThe trim in New England houses has traditionally been made from pine or cedar. Bob talks with Kristen Baer of Azek Trimboards about their product, a cellular PVC trim made using "free foam" manufacturing. The Azek boards have the look and feel of wood boards without any of the hassles. Azek is impervious to water, termites, and other insects, and comes with a 25-year warranty. The boards are easy to work with and cut. Azek will have 15 molding profiles available once their current expansion is complete. Azek trim boards are useful everywhere, especially in New England where harsh weather conditions cause freezing and thawing, expansion and contraction. The boards hold up well in coastal areas, too, and cost roughly the same as trim made of clear cedar. Azek trim pays for itself through savings on paint and maintenance. Azek boards do not need to be painted for protection but do hold paint nicely. Homeowners should use 100 percent acrylic latex paint on these boards. If they are to be painted a dark color, use "Vinyl Safe" by Sherwin Williams.
