How to Build a Simple Sandbox
An easy-to-build sandbox can be constructed in a few hours using basic tools. Most lumberyards will cut wood to length at no extra charge. Do-it-yourselfers with a circular saw or a power miter saw can make the required cuts with ease. A box of 2-1/2- or 3-inch galvanized nails and a hammer complete the job.
Wood Choices
Standard construction-grade lumber can be used to build a sturdy, long-lasting sandbox. Although the wood will be in direct contact with the ground, pressure-treated lumber should not be used. The chemicals used to protect the wood against rot and insects may be harmful to children. Untreated pine, fir or spruce will most likely outlast a child's interest in the sandbox.
Sand Choices
Sterile sand should be used in all cases. Often sold as "playground" or "sandbox" sand, it can be purchased in 50-pound bags at home centers, hardware stores and other locations that sell lawn and garden supplies. Construction-grade sand may contain unwanted particles that can be harmful to small children.

Step 1: Assembling the frame
Assemble the sides of the sandbox using the 2x12-inch lumber. Use longer pieces for the front and back, and the shorter pieces for the sides. Secure each piece with three 2-1/2- or 3-inch nails at each corner.
Step 2: Brace the corners
Starting in one corner, nail one 4x4-inch block to each adjoining side, making sure it creates a 90-degree angle. Install the remaining blocks, alternating corners in a diagonal pattern. Use three nails on each side of the 4x4-inch blocks.

Step 3: Install the corner seats
Once the square is complete, install the first corner triangle seat. Make sure the corner is square with the triangles right angle and flush with the top edge of the sandbox. Attach the seats by nailing or screwing at corner and along sides. Install the remaining seats, alternating corners in a diagonal pattern.

Step 4: Cover the sandbox
When not in use, placing the 4x4-foot lattice over the sand will prevent household and wild animals from entering the sandbox and soiling the sand.
