Garage Door Opener
Behind the Scenes - Dream Garage
Bob and Ryley selected commercial grade, pre-reinforced steel garage doors for the Dream Garage. They are heavier than most home garage doors, which are usually made of wood or fiberglass. When choosing any garage door, reinforcement is important so the door doesn't buckle. In this case the doors came pre-reinforced so this wasn't an issue.
With the help of Sears' installer Carl Redhead, Bob and Ryley installed a 1/2 horsepower Craftsman Belt Drive garage door opener. There are two lights on either side of the unit. It also has a rubber chain with small pieces of metal inside it for strength. Because the chain is rubber, the garage door opener runs quietly.
In the name of safety, two electric eyes were installed at the base of the door opening. They monitor the area below the open door. If there is anything in the path of these electric eyes as the door is closing, the door will stop and open up again. In this way if children run under the door while it is closing or a dog is napping in the door way, they won't be harmed by the closing door. These electric eyes are standard on all Sears garage door openers and are mandated by law in many states.
Installation of this unit is fairly simple. It can be accomplished by one person, but it is easier with two. Just be careful not to scratch the surface of the door.
