The Kalmans chose McElroy Metal's 5-V Crimp steel roof for the Lifespan House. It's called a 5-V crimp because it's crimped five times—twice at either side and once in the middle.
There's a lot more to this roof than just rolled steel. It's a light gauge steel product that's covered with a Galvalume® coating for corrosion resistance and then painted with a Kynar or Hylar pink coating. That is what gives it its distinctive color—reminiscent of the red roofs found on old barns around the country.

During installation of the roof the individual roofing sheets are fastened together with special screws that are color coordinated with the metal roof. The fasteners have a grounded washer that prevents water infiltration around the fastener. Additionally silicone caulk is injected where at the V joints as a sealant.
The recommended pattern for fastening for the Lifespan House roof profile is 12 inches on center, 16 inches on center off the slope creating a 12 x 16 inch grid.
While a 5-V crimp roof is typically more expensive than an asphalt shingle roof, its life expectancy is four to five times longer. There are other advantages as well. Many steel roofs are made out of recycled metal which can be recycled yet again as opposed to asphalt shingles, nearly 14 billion pounds of which end up in landfills every year.
