Over two years in development, the "Colors of Historic Charleston" from Lord and Evans is an exciting collection of colors which captures the essence and charm of this old, uniquely Southern city. The color palette is accompanied by an authenticated usage guide which illustrates how the colors may be evidenced by architectectural style and period as well as an architectural color selector offering large swatches with perforations for ease of use preparing color schedules for new construction and remodeling jobs.
The Historic Charleston Collection was developed under the auspices of the Historic Charleston Foundation, a group dedicated to the preservation and protection of the historical character of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Sales of these paints benefit the foundation and its efforts. Foundation conservators undertook the color research and analysis and authenticated the colors. The collection features about 120 colors that have been used in Charleston over the past 300 years. Almost all are available for both interior and exterior use.
Lord & Evans Paints, a Charleston company that traces its history in the paint business to 1865, markets the "Colors of Historic Charleston" unders its own label. These locally acclaimed paints and colors have been approved for use in the Historic District and Old City areas of Charleston as well as being specified for the exterior color schemes of neighborhoods such as I'On and Daniel Island among others.
To help keep the paint on the the wooden clapboards and trim of the Lifespan house in humid Charleston, a breathabler oil primer was first applied. It's made to keep the extractives in the wood—prevent the bleed from coming through the paint. At the same time it allows the moisture in the atmosphere of the house to breathe out through the primer.
The paint itself is a 100% acrylic latex paint. That's a big benefit in this climate, as acrylic latex paint is inherently mildew resistant—there's in nothing in it for mildew to eat. It also keeps its color better longer and it has a great sheen.
The body of the Lifespan house is Oyster Shell and the windows, trim, and fence are a Super White High Gloss. The exterior shutters and handrail are authentic Charleston Green which is available in both oil and acrylic latex.

• Stucco Creamtone - living room, downstairs hall (trim)
• Blake House Yellow - kernel bedroom closets (walls)
• Aunt Betty's China - dining room (trim)
• Ceiling White - all ceilings
• Super Hide White - upstairs hall bath, kernel bedroom and bath (walls)
