Many of the Elmwood projects involved the restoration of exterior features, including shingle and clapboard siding, decks, porches, and elegant trimwork. To help protect exteriors against the often harsh New England weather, the woodworking was finished with products that will both provide maximum protection and highlight the natural materials.
Thompson's House and Trim Solid Stain was used on the Verity house and the Murray house as well as on Judy Lee's home. The deep-penetrating oil stain covers the grain and lets the natural wood texture show through while providing outstanding waterproofing and UV protection in one easy step. This mildew resistant coating is available in 50 opaque custom colors.
Thompson's Moisture Resistant House and Trim Paint in a hunter green, young spruce and custom yellow were used for the trim, windows, and accents on the Lee house. A custom mulberry was used for the clapboard and shingles. The paint combines a lifetime guarantee for moisture resistance with ease of use and resistance to fading and is available in hundreds of colors in flat, satin, and semi-gloss.
To help fight damage from from water, sun, mildew, algae, and rot, the new shingles, bead board, and decking were coated with Thompson's Water Seal Clear Wood Protector. This clear coating slows the fading of the wood's color. Easy to use, it only requires one coat while its long lasting formula protects up to four years, depending on environmental conditions.
The Verity and Karczmar projects both used Thompson's Water Seal Clear Multi-surface Waterproofer. This clear coating exceeds waterproofing standards for wood, concrete, and brick to help stop cracking, splitting, and other water damage while allowing the wood's color to weather naturally to gray.
