Master Bedroom - Newton, MA

Home Again

Season 6 -

Master Bedroom

Newton, MA

This 13 episode project highlights the remodel of a master bedroom suite in a compact 1930s Colonial Revival home in suburban Newton, Massachusetts. The family has chosen to invest in location rather than size. They've got a great school system but feel the need to give their tiny house a little expansion. With limited land to work with, Bob explores some innovative ways to expand the value of the property without overstepping the budget.

As the addition gets underway Bob details the process of building the foundation from forming, and cement pouring to inspection, still work, and backfilling. He even visits Boston Sand & Gravel to see how the cement is produced to order for the job. Bob spotlights the second floor framing and then heads up on the roof to demonstrate the correct way to apply asphalt shingles around a skylight installation to avoid future leaks. Other project features include sweating copper joints, applying skimcoat plaster, and shingling the sidewall with red cedar. The new boiler is installed and connected to flexible vinyl piping. Out back, sections of the old deck are integrated into the new one to save time and money and recycle materials.

Woodworking is highlighted in a trio of segments. Bob visits the contractor's workshop to see how the interior baseboard molding and window trim is milled to match the rest of the house. Back in Ryley's workshop Bob and Ryley put together some bookshelves and then build them into the new family room. Over at GC Paul Morse's workshop, Bob and Paul construct a custom vanity for the new master bath. A stunning new aggregate tile product makes a big splash on the master bathroom floor and an exciting vinyl flooring product from Britain utilizes computer aided design to create a customized in the new family room.

On site field trips include a visit to the Georgia-Pacific plant where the deck's pressure-treated lumber is processed and a Sherwin-Williams factory in Florida where Bob gets a first hand look at how paint is made.
