In this 13 episode project Bob breaks out of the residential mold and constructs his "dream garage". This innovative and functional post-and-beam barn structure is designed to provide space to store and work on boats and cars. The story centers around creating a state of the art, ergonomically efficient, well-lit, and safe environment. The foundation features styrofoam forms which will double as rigid insulation after the pour. Radiant heat tubing is installed in the concrete slab to provide optimal conditions for working on and storing classic cars year round.

Steeped in construction tradition, framing of the post and beam structure gets underway. A joinery specialist from Plimoth Plantation, a nearby historic recreation of life in 17th century New England, provides some insight on how the Pilgrims built their homes.

Bob's garage juxtaposes the old and new as the massive engineered wood glulam ridge poles from Willamette Industries are lowered by crane onto the structure and structurally insulated panels (SIPs) from Insulspan are locked together to form the walls and roof. The barn is sided with more engineered wood, in this instance, durable and attractive cedar plywood panels and topped off with a standing-seam steel roof.

Inside, the barn gets a state of the art alarm and sprinkler system. Hot air space heaters are installed in the boat section to provide almost instant heat, and lighting expert Markus Earley guides Bob's selection of Lightolier overhead and track lighting fixtures to ensure that throughout the barn the lighting is just right for the task at hand. Outside, landscape expert Ruth Foster spruces up the barn's exterior with just the right mix of pitch pine, blueberry bushes, and wildflowers.

Cutting edge interior touches include the high-strength aluminum/magnesium alloy pipe railing for the loft stairs and the 18 gauge steel wire shelving storage unit in the loft.

Indy driver Lyn St. James drops by to check out Bob's finished garage and share a little automotive-care advice. With all the work complete, Bob's boat arrives for winter storage.
