Accessible Home - Roxbury, MA

Home Again

Season 9 -

Accessible Home

Roxbury, MA

The 13 episode Roxbury project is another urban renewal story, on a more grass-roots, affordable housing scale. Roxbury's Blue Hill Avenue neighborhood, only minutes from downtown Boston, was once home to middle-class Jewish and Irish families. It underwent a violent decline in the 1950s, which has only very recently been reversed. Pointed efforts for redevelopment, on the part of the mayor's office and community organizations, have started a trend that will convert Roxbury into Boston's next neighborhood in demand.

Bob's pitching in with Nuestra Comunidad, a community development corporation that's building nine new three-bedroom homes along the avenue, including one unit with accessibility for people with disabilities. We'll focus on construction training for workers from the community, and design and installation of special accessibility features. And we'll take an in-depth look at the historic architecture and community revitalization efforts of this vibrant neighborhood in the midst of a momentous transition.
