Habitat For Humanity - Yonkers, NY

Home Again

Season 10 -

Habitat for Humanity

Yonkers, NY

Looking forward to homebuilding in the new millennium, Bob introduces the latest in sustainable materials and efficient building techniques on a 13 episode Habitat for Humanity "blitz build". In Yonkers, New York, a crowd of Habitat for Humanity volunteers, neighbors, city officials, and an inspired collaboration of contractors converge on a vacant lot. Vila, a former Community Development volunteer with the Peace Corp back in the '60s, has tapped the spirit of volunteerism in New York State's second largest city. The project documents a five day "blitz build", after which a snug, comfortable, and sustainable home will stand where once there were only weeds and litter.

The rapid construction of this little house is made possible by the use of cutting edge technology in building materials. Structural engineered panels make up the walls and roof, engineered lumber flies together for the framing and decking, and other engineered products like trim, siding, flooring, a pre-cast foundation system, fast-drying paints, ready-made drywall corners, and smart wiring all save time in construction and add to the home's durability. Super-efficient windows, insulation, and Energy Star appliances and mechanicals ensure the home's cost efficiency for decades to come. For a closer look at all these new products, Bob's side trips around the country will feature engineered lumber manufacturing in the Pacific Northwest, reforestation efforts on Mt. St. Helens, a photovoltaics factory, and other specially-designed communities of the future in Arizona. He even travels to Germany to get a look at some European advances in flooring and water heaters.
