Season 11 - Elmwood Neighborhood
Providence, RI View Project Location in Google Maps
The second half of the season's programming continues the theme of community building in the historic Elmwood neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Rather than tackling one house for 13 episodes , Bob's helping eleven neighbors tackle smaller projects like porches, kitchens, bathrooms, and even a third-floor artist's studio. Each episode will feature one of these smaller projects from start to finish, giving the viewer a behind-the-scenes, down-and-dirty perspective on how to tackle these elements in their own homes.
All built between 1870 and 1905, these historic homes are part of a neighborhood and a city in revival: Elmwood, along with much of greater Providence and urban areas throughout the US, went through a period of urban blight in the mid 1900's. Once the elegant residences of prosperous local entrepreneurs and factory owners, these grand Shingle Style and Colonial Revival homes were divided into apartments and fell into disrepair. With the recent booming economy, however, Providence has benefited from some ambitious city management and its advantageous geography, located midway between Boston and New York. Local professionals, artists, and young families are buying up these crumbling beauties and are slowly restoring their former glory, at the do-it-yourselfer's pace.
Projects will include intensive care for weather-damaged exteriors, structural reinforcement of a roof sundeck to support a hot tub, bringing kitchens from the 19th to the 21st century (and finding someplace more discreet to put the powder room), turning and milling historically correct porch details, installing a "rubber" slate roof, and repurposing attic space as an exercise room or an open-plan artist's studio. This series will focus on affordability and "livability" in home improvement within the requirements of a historic district and will involve the homeowners themselves in a great deal of the work and decision-making.
