Modern Colonial: This classic center entry Colonial-style home is "wrapped" in modern amenities and building techniques. This photo, taken in April 2002, shows the Home Again project house before the siding, a pre-finished wood shingle, has been applied.

Home Again

Season 13 -

Modern Colonial

Centerville, MA

This year's project focuses on the construction of a Colonial-style home built with both history and the future in mind. While this 4-bedroom, 4-bath home will have a traditional exterior and interior detailing, the plan will suit the needs of a modern family, including easy-maintenance fireplaces, a great room, master suite, sun room, 3-car garage, and a large walk-out basement with plenty of room for recreation and indoor/outdoor living. The project will allow Bob to team up again with carpenter Bob Ryley to showcase the best in traditional home construction practices as well as a variety of finish carpentry and fine woodworking projects.

As we will be spending twice as many episodes on this project as we normally do (26 rather than the usual 13 episodes), Bob will spend a great deal of time on interior design projects and how-to tips, with the help of a high-level designer. These segments may include antique shopping trips, drapery pointers and other window treatments, stenciling and faux-finishing techniques, re-upholstery, accessorizing, use of space, and many others.

Bob will take side trips throughout the series to visit local craftspeople and manufacturing facilities. He'll spend time in the woodshop with Bob Ryley and with students and teachers from the famed North Bennet Street School in Boston, showing the viewer how to reproduce some of the key historical features of the historic homes in the area to give our new house a hand-made touch and reconcile the need for modern amenities with historical accuracy in creating a truly refined home for a family with 21st century needs.
