THESE BEAUTIFULLY DECORATIVE STARS

THAT WERE ORIGINALLY MADE OUT OF CAST-IRON

AND WERE INTENDED TO HOLD BRICK STRUCTURES TOGETHER.

WELL, NOW THEY'RE JUST A DECORATIVE ELEMENT.

AND, OF COURSE, THE TYPICAL PORCHES--

THE DOUBLE-STORIED PORCHES WITH THE WHITE COLUMNS

AND THE PANELED CEILINGS AND THE FANS

AND THE BEAUTIFUL BALUSTERS.

THIS IS ONE OF THE PRETTIEST HOUSES HERE IN I'ON

AT THIS POINT AND IT'S A HOUSE THAT TRIES

TO REALLY HONOR THE HISTORIC TRADITIONS

OF SOME OF THIS ARCHITECTURE.

BUT IF YOU LOOK OVER MY LEFT SHOULDER,

SOME OF THE HOUSES DOWN THIS LANE,

WHICH IS KNOWN AS PRESCIENT STREET,

ARE ALSO VERY GOOD EXAMPLES

OF WHAT WE CONSIDER THE BEST OF CHARLESTON ARCHITECTURE,

LOW-COUNTRY ARCHITECTURE.

THE 3 IN A ROW DOWN THERE,

THE BRICK AND THEN THE PINK STUCCO

WITH THE PEDIMENTS AND THE DOUBLE PORCHES AND THE COLUMNS,

ALL OF THESE ELEMENTS,

WHICH TOGETHER WITH OTHER THINGS

LIKE THE BEAUTIFUL TIN ROOFS OR THE METAL ROOFS

REALLY GIVE YOU THE FLAVOR OF THE OLD SOUTH

AND THE FLAVOR OF THIS COMMUNITY.

THIS IS SOWELL STREET THAT WE'RE WALKING DOWN

AND HERE WE GOT SOME OF THE FIRST HOUSES

THAT WERE BUILT IN I'ON

WHICH REALLY GIVE YOU AN IDEA

IS THE FACT THAT THEY'VE LEFT EVERYTHING IN PLACE.

OF THE ENTIRE HOUSE AND ALSO FOR THE ROOF SHEATHING.

THE ROOF SHEATHING IS PLYWOOD, IT'S TECHSHIELD.

IT IS THE TECHSHIELD, THAT'S RIGHT.

WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THAT EARLIER.

AND THAT'S WHAT WE'VE GOT OVER HERE, RIGHT?

THAT'S CORRECT. IT'S GOT A FOIL APPLIED TO ONE SIDE

WITH A BUNCH OF MICRO-PROCESSED HOLES

ALL APPLIED IN THERE.

RIGHT. WELL, WE'RE GONNA LEARN ALL ABOUT IT

A LITTLE BIT LATER IN THE SHOW.

THIS IS OUR SCRATCH COAT,

SO IT'S BEEN APPLIED AND THEY'LL COME ALONG

AND PUT A FINISH COAT AND THEN A COLOR COAT ON IT.

IT'S CALLED A SCRATCH COAT BECAUSE AFTER YOU TROWEL IT ON,

THEN AS IT'S SETTING UP, YOU COME BY AND YOU SCRATCH IT,

AND THAT'S WHAT'S GOING TO PROVIDE THE BITE FOR THE FINAL COLOR.

THAT'S THE ADHESION.

THAT'S THE IDEA AT LEAST.

THEY'RE JUST TOENAILED USING 16 PENNY COMMON NAILS.

KEVIN, IS THERE A REASON THAT WE DIDN'T USE

PREFABRICATED ROOF TRUSSES FOR THESE ROOF SYSTEMS?

THIS SECTION THAT WE'RE FRAMING RIGHT NOW, BOB,

IS A CATHEDRAL OF ALL THE SECTIONS.

AND WE WANT TO GET THAT 10 INCHES OF INSULATION RIGHT IN HERE,

SO THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS,

THE OTHER IS TIME.

NOW THIS IS A HOT WEATHER PRODUCT.

THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT'S DESIGNED FOR COLDER CLIMATES,

BUT RATHER FOR AREAS WHERE YOU CAN REDUCE

THE AMOUNT OF HEAT GAINED

INTO THE ATTIC SPACE BY UP TO 30 DEGREES

BECAUSE THIS WILL ACTUALLY ACT AS A MIRROR.

IT WILL RADIATE THE HEAT RIGHT BACK

THROUGH THE PLYWOOD AND THE SHINGLE

AND WON'T LET IT GET INTO THE ATTIC SPACE,

SO IT'S A REAL ENERGY SAVER.

WHAT ABOUT HOW IT SHOULD BE ATTACHED, BRIAN?

WELL, ATTACHMENT OF ROOF SHEATHING IN A HIGH WIND AREA

LIKE WE HAVE HERE IS CRITICAL.

A LOW-SLOPE ROOF-- THE LOWER THE SLOPE,

THE MORE UPLIFT YOU HAVE. AND IN THIS CASE,

WE WOULD RECOMMEND A RING-SHANK NAIL BE USED,

BECAUSE OF THE ADDITIONAL WITHDRAWAL CAPACITY.

RIGHT.

AND THAT WOULD BE LOCATED AT 4 INCHES

ON THE CENTER ALONG THE END OF THE PANELING,

6 INCHES ON THE CENTER ALONG THE INTERMEDIATE FRAMING MEMBERS.

AND THE POINT OF THE RING-SHANK

IS A LITTLE BIT LIKE A SCREW.

IT'S NOT QUITE A SCREW,

BUT IT DOES GRIP AND IT WON'T SLIP BACK OUT OF THE WOOD.

IT HAS A LOT MORE WITHDRAWAL VALUE THAN A SCREW.

RIGHT. AND WHAT ABOUT ADHESIVES?

DO YOU RECOMMEND THE USE OF ANY KIND OF PANEL ADHESIVES ON THE SHEATHING?

WE DON'T REALLY RECOMMEND THE USE OF AN ADHESIVE

BECAUSE THAT TENDS TO SQUEEZE OUT IN THE PANEL JOINTS.

AND WE LIKE THOSE JOINTS TO MAINTAIN A 1/8th OF AN INCH SPACE,

SO THAT THE PANELS CAN EXPAND, MORE OR LESS AN EXPANSION JOINT.

AND WITH THE ADHESIVE IN THAT JOINT,

IT KIND OF RESTRAINS THE PANEL FROM EXPANSION.

HOWEVER, AS I UNDERSTAND IT,

THE SHEATHING SYSTEM OF A ROOF AND A HURRICANE

CAN STILL KEEP A LOT OF WATER OUT,

STEVE, WHAT IS THIS STUFF?

WELL, IT MAY LOOK LIKE JUST AN ORDINARY SHEET OF PLASTIC,

BUT IT'S ACTUALLY VERY FINE POLYETHYLENE FIBERS

THAT ARE BONDED UNDER HEAT AND PRESSURE

TO MAKE A WEATHER-RESISTANT BARRIER FOR YOUR HOUSE.

OK. I'VE ALWAYS CALLED IT OLEFIN.

IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP IT PLUMB. THERE YOU GO.

ABSOLUTELY.

AND, UM...

THE TERM OLEFIN BASICALLY MEANS THAT--

A SPUN POLYESTER?

IT'S A POLYETHYLENE FIBER, ACTUALLY.

IT'S ACTUALLY SMALLER THAN A HUMAN HAIR.

AND THE WAY IT WORKS--

WELL, TELL ME HOW IT WORKS.

WELL, THE CONCEPT IS THAT, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF BUILDERS

WILL BUILD HOMES AND NOT PUT ANY TYPE

OF WEATHER-RESISTANT BARRIER UNDERNEATH THE CLADDING.

AND ALL CLADDING SYSTEMS LEAK, OF COURSE.

WHETHER IT'S A CEDAR CLAPBOARD LIKE WE'LL HAVE HERE

OR VINYL SIDING OR STUCCO--ANY KIND OF CLADDING SYSTEM OR SKIN

IS GOING TO ALLOW A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF WEATHER TO GET IN.

ABSOLUTELY. AND WHAT THIS DOES,

IF WATER DOES GET BEHIND, AND IT ALWAYS DOES,

BEHIND THE CLADDING IT DRAINS OFF

WITHOUT BEING SUCKED INTO THE SHEATHING,

WHERE IT CAN CAUSE WOOD TO ROT OR MOLD OR MILDEW

AND CAUSE LOTS OF PROBLEMS.

AND, OF COURSE, ANOTHER GREAT FEATURE

IS THAT IT'S A GREAT AIR FILTRATION BARRIER.

EACH HOME HAS ABOUT, YOU KNOW, OVER 2,000 FEET

OF CRACKS AND GAPS.

IS THAT RIGHT?

THAT'S RIGHT.

IN THE AVERAGE HOME,

SO THAT WHEN YOU PUT THE HOUSE WRAP ON IT,

YOU'RE PREVENTING THAT MUCH AIR INFILTRATION, RIGHT?

WELL, WHAT ABOUT TRAPPING THE MOISTURE IN THE HOUSE?

DON'T YOU HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT?

IT'S REALLY AN ENGINEERED PRODUCT

THAT ALLOWS YOU TO HAVE THESE LAYERS OF FIBERS

THAT ARE MADE IN SUCH A MANNER

SO IT'S KIND OF LIKE A GORETEX.

SO IF YOU HAVE TOO MUCH HUMIDITY IN THE HOUSE,

IT CAN WORK ITS WAY OUT,

BUT IF YOU GET A BIG BLOW ON THE OUTSIDE,

IT WON'T WORK ITS WAY IN.

WELL, THE AVERAGE FAMILY PUTS OUT ABOUT 70 PINTS OF MOISTURE A DAY,

SO THAT MOISTURE BUILDS UP INSIDE THE HOME,

BUT IF IT GETS INSIDE YOUR WALL SYSTEM,

IT CAN CAUSE LOTS OF PROBLEMS.

OK. NOW WE GOT TO PUT ANOTHER LAYER UP AT THE TOP.

OK, IT'S GOOD AND TIGHT, STEVE.

NOW CUTTING THE OPENING IN THE WINDOW--

WE USED TO JUST MAKE THAT AN "X" AND PULL IT BACK,

BUT YOU'RE MAKING A DIFFERENT KIND OF A SHAPE THERE, AREN'T YOU?

THAT'S RIGHT. THIS HERE IS A MUCH MORE EFFICIENT WAY

TO REALLY INSTALL THE PRODUCT,

BECAUSE IT ALLOWS YOU TO--

IF YOU'LL LET ME HAVE YOUR STAPLER THERE--

GIVE ME THE KNIFE BACK.

IT ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE THIS IN AND REALLY...

WHAT ABOUT TAPE? DON'T YOU HAVE TO USE TAPE WITH ALL OF THIS?

THAT'S RIGHT. ACTUALLY, THERE'S A SPECIAL TYVEK TAPE.

AND IT'S IMPORTANT THAT, OF COURSE,

YOU ALWAYS PUT THE TYVEK ON SO THAT THE TOP LAYER

ALWAYS SHINGLES OVER THE FIRST AND THEN WRAP THIS

WITH THE TYVEK TAPE.

ALL RIGHT, SO THAT'S THE PLACE WHERE THE TAPE GOES.

OK, WELL, THANKS A LOT.
