Bob Vila pioneered the genre of Home Improvement TV with the 1979 premiere of "This Old House", a 13-part television series on step-by-step home renovation. The show was an instant hit in the local Boston market and was subsequently picked up by PBS and was broadcast nationwide on public television with Bob as its host for ten years. In 1989, Bob left WGBH and founded B.V.T.V Inc., a television production company which produces "Bob Vila's Home Again."
Back at WGBH, with a new host in place, "This Old House" began producing new programming. The original episodes with Bob Vila as host were syndicated onto cable and continue to air daily as "This Old House Classics".
