To join togethe of a 3/8-inch drive ratchet with a 1Ú2 inch drive socket. The fitting hasa female 3/8-inch square on one side into which the ratchet drive fits, and a male 1Ú2 inch square on the other side onto which the drive socket slides.
Accumulator
Storage tank which receives liquid refrigerant from evaporator and prevents it from flowing into suction line before vaporizing. Tank on the suction side of a system that holds excess refrigerant to prevent slugging the compressor with liquid.
Acid
A substance that increases the concentration of hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. Most acids dissolve common metals and will react with a base to form a salt.
Acid condition in system
Condition in which refrigerant or oil in system is mixed with fluids that are acid in nature.
Acid etch
The use of a strong acid to remove the surface of a material.
Acid medium
A compost which contains little or no lime and has a pH of less than 6.5. Sometimes referred to as "sour" soil by gardeners.
Acid rain
Rainwater that contains sulphur dioxide and other pollutants.
Acid soil
Soil that is lower than 7.0 ph (higher would be alkaline). Acidity is measured by the amount of calcium in the soil, as is alkaline soil.
Acidity
The level of concentration of acid in water. Acid will neutralize an alkali or base. It is usually expressed in terms of its calcium carbonate equivalent.
