| Algae
Microorganisms that may grow to colonies in damp environments, including certain rooftops. They can discolor shingles. Often described as "fungus.". |
| Algaecide
Normally in tablet form, placed in evaporator drain pan. Used to help slow the growth of bacteria. |
| Align-a-cut
The align-a-cut feature can be found on several table saw models. This feature aligns a mark on the workpiece with the cutting blade for quick, accurate cuts. |
| Alkali
Water-soluble mineral compound, usually a moderate strength base (as opposed to caustic hydroxide), such as a bicarbonate and carbonate compound when it is present in the water. |
| Alkaline soil
Soil that has a pH level of about 7.0 or more. Sometimes referred to as "sweet" soil. |
| Alkalinity
The measurement of constituents in a water supply which determine alkaline conditions. The alkalinity of water is a measure of its capacity to neutralize acids. |
| Alkyd
Synthetic resin modified with oil for good adhesion to a clean surface, and good gloss, color retention, and flexibility. Slow- drying. |
| Alkyl benzene sulfonate
Sulfonate A chemical compound formerly used as detergent. Sometimes called "hard" detergent, because of its resistance to biological degradation, largely replaced with linear alkyl sulfonate (LAS), which is more readily biodegradable. |
| Alligatoring
A characteristic of asphalt which occurs during the aging process in which the loss of volatile oils and the oxidation brought about by solar radiation produces a pattern of cracks which resemble an alligator hide, because of the limited tolerance to thermal expansion or contraction. |
| Allowable span
The distance between two supporting points for load bearing lumber such as joist, rafters or a girder. |
