Astm tests
There are two governing bodies that set standards. The first is The American Society for Testing and Materials. This is a 100 year old standard setting organization based in the United States. The ANSI Standards currently use ASTM Testing methods. The second governing body is the ISO Committee for Ceramic Tile this is a governing body setting European Standards. The ISO is using new testing methods developed in Europe. There are 16 tests referred to in the ANSI A137.1 Specifications for tile.

Astragal
Molding which resembles a string of beads and is usually attached to one of a pair of door, which closes on the other. The molding covers the space between the closed doors to provide a weather seal.

Astragal mold
T-profiled molding usually used between meeting doors or casement windows.

Astral
Small semi-circular molding placed around the top or bottom of columns.

Asynchronous generator
A type of electric generator that produces alternating current that matches an existing power source.

Atactic polypropylene
A group of high molecular weight polymers formed by the polymerization of propylene.

Atmospheric combustion
Burning which takes place when gaseous, liquid, or solid fuels react at an elevated temperature with oxygen, thus releasing heat.

Atmospheric pressure
The pressure of the air at sea level; one standard atmosphere at zero degrees centigrade is equal to 14.695 pounds per square inch (1.033 kilograms per square centimeter).

Atrium
An inner courtyard of a home or other building that is open to the sky or covered by a skylight.
