Chemical resistance
A materials ability to retain its properties when it comes into contact with certain chemicals.

Chemical vapor deposition (cvd)
A method of depositing thin semiconductor films used to make certain types of solar photovoltaic devices. With this method, a substrate is exposed to one or more vaporized compounds, one or more of which contain desirable constituents. A chemical reaction is initiated, at or near the substrate surface, to produce the desired material that will condense on the substrate.

Chiller
A device that produces chilled water to provide air conditioning for large buildings or cooling for process applications. A device that cools water, usually to between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for eventual use in cooling air.

Chime
Paint can lip which holds the can lid fastened.

Chimney
A masonry or metal stack that creates a draft to bring air to a fire and to carry the gaseous byproducts of combustion safely away.

Chimney back
The back wall or lining of a furnace, chimney or fireplace.

Chimney breast
The horizontal projection-usually inside a building-of a chimney from the wall in which it is built.

Chimney cap
Concrete cap surrounding the top of the chimney brick and protects the masonry from the elements.

Chimney cricket
The peaked projection that is built adjacent to a chimney for the purpose of redirecting water away from the chimney.

Chimney effect
The upward flow through a channel that is named after the way hot air rises through a chimney.
