Drill bit extension
A drill bit extension (also called an extension shaft) is a shaft with a collar and two set screws which extends the reach of any drill bit.

Drill bit length
Drill bit length is typically in 'jobbers length' determined by the diameter according to trade custom. An extension bit is an extra-long bit, typically from 6-12 inches. Special, 18 in. Long 'electricians' length bits are also available. In addition, drill bit extensions can be used to extend reach.

Drill bit shank
A drill bit shank is the end of the drill bit that fits into a chuck. Most drill shanks are the same diameter as the overall bit, but some larger bits have 'turned-down shanks' which are sized to fit a particular chuck. Bits with hex shanks fit only hex shank chucks, which are designed to prevent slippage.

Drill chuck
Mechanical device, which is mounted on either an electric or manual drill, which has jaws and a collar that is tightened to grip and hold the drill bit.

Drill drift
Flat piece of metal, which is tapered, to use in wedging a tapered drill bit loose from its tapered socket.

Drill gauge
Used to determine a drill bit size, this plate has holes of various sizes, which have been drilled by and are equal to, different sized bits

Drill holder
Holder for a drill bit in a lathe, which allows a hole to be drilled in the work as it is turning.

Drill motor
Electric motor or motor driven by compressed air that has a chuck or other device attached to hold and turn a drill bit.

Drill power
Drill power is measured in maximum horsepower (hp) developed by the motor. Power increases as drill size increases, while drill speed decreases. The more power, the more torque at the cutting end.

Drill press
Machine consisting of a stand, a holder for a drill bit and a motor to turn that bit, which is used to bore holes in precise locations at precise angles.
