Friction
(1) The rubbing of one object against another. (2) The resistance to motion of two adjoining surfaces, such as between a fluid and the pipe through which it runs.

Friction catch or latch
The mechanism that uses friction to keep a cabinet door close.

Friction head
The energy lost from the movement of a fluid in a conduit (pipe) due to the disturbances created by the contact of the moving fluid with the surfaces of the conduit, or the additional pressure that a pump must provide to overcome the resistance to fluid flow created by or in a conduit.

Friction head difference
The difference in head required to move a mass of fluid from one position to another at a certain flow rate within a piping system. It is also the specific energy required to overcome friction in the system.

Friction loss
The loss of pressure caused by the turbulence created in water while traveling through the pipe.

Friction pile
Piling supported by the friction with the soil surrounding it.

Friction tape
Water-resistant, cloth-based electrical insulating tape that has an adhesive backing.

Frieze
