Laying off

Laying out
Using a plan to determine, prior to actual work, to determine the manner in which pieces of a structure or system relate to each other.

Laying overhand
To build a face of masonry wall from the opposite side of the face.

Laying the ends
Building the corners of a brick wall, laying the leads, properly, so that the walls are straight, level and plumb.

Layout lines
Lines chalked on a substrate to guide in accurately setting tile.

Layout stick
A long strip of wood marked at the appropriate joint intervals for the tile to be used. It is used to check the length, width or height of the tile work. Common names for this item are "idiot stick" or "story pole".

Lazy susan
Circular, revolving platform, which provides access to all sides. They are especially handy in poorly accessible parts of kitchen cabinets.

Leach
(1) To cause a liquid to filter down through some material. (2) To subject to the washing action of a filtering liquid. (3) To remove or separate solids from liquids, in a septic system, by percolating through the soil.

Leach field
Porous soiled area, through which septic tank leach lines run, emptying out the treated liquid waste, forced from the tank, which then percolates down through the soil.

Leach lines
Lines that carry effluent from the septic system out to the leach fields where, when new sewage is added to the tank, it empties into the area of porous soil.
