Loan application where verification of income is not required and is typically granted in cases of large down payments.

No-hub connector
A connector for no-hub iron pipe consisting of a rubber sleeve and a stainless steel band secured by hose clamps. A variation, a neoprene sleeve with two adjustable steel bands, is used for connecting dissimilar materials, as when connecting new plastic pipe to an existing cast-iron drainpipe.

No-hub joint
A joint between cast iron drainage pipes consisting of stainless steel clamp and neoprene sleeve.

Noble
In reference to metal, inert or inactive.

Nocturnal cooling
The effect of cooling by the radiation of heat from a building to the night sky.

Node
The part of a stem from which a leaf or new branch starts to grow.

Nodular cast iron
Commonly used for fittings, valves, pipe, etc., this iron has magnesium or cerium added while in a liquefied state, so that it can be formed into globular nodules. Also called ductile cast iron, it has good corrosion-resistant characteristic and is less brittle than gray cast iron.

Nodules
Outgrowths on the roots of plants in the bean family that are inhabited by nitrogen-fixing microorganisms known as rhizobia.

Nogging
Paneled brickwork installed between house timbers. Vertical timbers are called posts; horizontal sections are called "nogging pieces".

Nominal (nom)
Usually refers to the Inside diameter of trade sizes of copper pipe and some CPVC pipes. Not for Iron Pipe connections. For example, a 1Ú2" NOM Comp. Fitting is actually 5/8" because 1Ú2" pipe has an OD of 5/8".
