Planer bite
A groove cut in the surface of the piece deeper than intended by the planer knives.

Planer gauge
Measuring instrument, used to precisely check slot widths, consisting of two inclined adjustable planes that can cause the assembly to become thinner or thicker and are then locked in place to use as a gauge of set caps.

Planer milling machine
Milling machine to be used for heavy milling work.

Planer, rotary
Shank mounted rotary blade cutter that can be used in a drill press for planning wood surfaces.

Planer/molder
A planer/molder is used to finish lumber and mold decorative designs in baseboards, furniture, casing and picture frames.

Planet gear

Planetary gear

Plank
Solid boards, usually 3/4" thick and 3" to 8" wide designed to be installed in parallel rows. Edges may be beveled to simulate the appearance of Colonial American plank floors.

Plank flooring
