Roof run
The horizontal distance from the top plate of the wall to the midpoint of the roof.

Roof seamer
A mechanical device used to crimp metal roof panels and make the seams watertight, or a machine used to weld membrane laps of PVC (Thermoplastic) roofing material.

Roof sheathing
Flat boards which are nailed to the rafters on the top of a house, to which tar paper and then shingles are attached.

Roof slope
The angle made by the roof surface plane with the horizontal plane and expressed as the amount of vertical rise for every twelve inch (12") horizontal run. For instance, a roof that rises four inches (4") for every twelve inch (12") horizontal run, is expressed as having a "four in twelve" slope; often written as "4.

Roof system
Multiple roof components assembled to provide waterproofing (and sometimes insulating) capabilities for a structure.

Roof tile
Roofing material, usually made of clay or cement. Used primarily in the south and west.

Roof truss
A triangular structure used to support a roof. Multiple trusses are used to assemble the framework for a roof.

Roof ventilator
A stationary or rotating vent used to ventilate attics or cathedral ceilings; usually made of galvanized steel, or polypropylene.

Roofer
An individual who installs roof systems and materials.

Roofer's knife
A blade with a hook shaped blade, used for cutting asphalt shingles.
