Shroud
Color-matched component under a wall-mount lavatory that covers the drain outlet for aesthetic purposes.

Shrub
A woody plant with a framework of branches and little or no central stem.

Shutoff valve
Most commonly refers to angle stops installed under sinks and toilets, but also valves installed on branch lines and alongside the meter.

Shutter
An interior or exterior movable panel that operates on hinges or slides into place, used to protect windows or provide privacy.

Shutters
Window or door screens featuring horizontal slats that may be articulated, allowing control over air and light transmission. They are usually made of wood. While they may be hinged, modern exterior shutters are often decorative and remain fixed to the wall alongside the window or door opening.

Sick building syndrome (sbs)
A phenomenon in which building occupants experience a variety of health and/or comfort effects linked to time spent in a particular building, but where no specific illness or causative agent can be identified. Symptoms in sufferers often include headaches, eye irritation, and respiratory irritation.

Side clearance angle
The measurement, in degrees, of the amount that the front edge of a metal lathe cutting tool bit deviates from plumb.

Side cutter
Plier-like nail and wire cutters, whose cutting edges are on the side of the head, parallel to the handles.

Side hook approach
The distance that remains between a wall and a hook where it can come closest to touching the wall. Since a bridge crane hook is attached by a cable around a drum, at the center of the trolley, and moves back and forth with the trolley along the bridge, the hook does not reach the wall when the trolley reaches it. Therefore, there is always space that the hook cannot cover from this approach.

Side jamb
Side parts found on a door or window frame.
