Solstice
The two times of the year when the sun is apparently farthest north and south of the earth's equator; usually occurring on or around June 21 (summer solstice in northern hemisphere, winter solstice for southern hemisphere) and December 21 (winter solstice in northern hemisphere, summer solstice for the southern hemisphere).

Soluble
Able to be dissolved and to pass into a solution.

Solute
The substance which is dissolved in and by a solvent. Dissolved solids, such as the minerals found in water, are solutes.

Solvent
A liquid capable of dissolving other substances such as bitumen or a liquid that is part of a substance and is used to make that substance easier to work with. Once applied, the solvent evaporates and leaves the working characteristics of the substance. Examples are solvent-based adhesives and solvent-based mastics.

Solvent weld
Any of the types of PVC pipe and fittings that are fastened together with solvent-based cement.

Soot pocket
Chimney flue bottom space where accumulated soot can be removed through a cleanout door.

Sooty mold
Several insect pests will release honey dew, which is a sticky substance that then mold grows on (thus the black coloring). Most associated with aphids. Use a soapy water solution to rinse off the insect pest.
