Space standards
Minimum dimensions required for various activities in a building, which are established by law for safety and comfort.

Spacer
(1) Cross shaped, small plastic pieces, which are used to space tiles during the installation of ceramic tile, so that they are evenly placed. (2) Small concrete blocks that support and maintain rebar at a specified height off of the bottom of a concrete pour.

Spacing
The distance between two structural members.

Spacing flange
Spacing flanges are used to ensure a secure fit with 6 inch wire wheels, 6 inch buffing wheels, 8 inch wire wheels and 8 inch buffing wheels. They are not usually needed for 5 inch bench grinder or grinding wheels.

Spacing mix
A dry or dampened mixture of one part portland cement and one part extra-fine sand. This mix is used as a filler in the joints of mounted tile.

Spackle
To cover wallboard joints with plaster.

Spackling compound
A material used as a crack filler for preparing surfaces before painting.

Spade bit
Wood boring bit which is used with a power drill to shave wood in a circular section equal in diameter to the width of the head of the bit. The flat head, whose edges are ground to a beveled edge, has a point used to center the bit in the wood. The turning shank forces the point into the wood.

Spade bits
Spade bits (sometimes called power wood bits or flat boring bits) are inexpensive, disposable wood-drilling bits which scrape instead of cut. They quickly bore holes up to 2 inches in wood and composition wood products where they are efficient, but rough, hole-forming is acceptable. They have slim shanks, flat paddle blades and long sharp points. The width of the paddle equals the diameter of the hole. Spade bits perform best at higher speeds.

Spading tool
Tool that uses a long, flat bade with a handle, used to compact newly placed concrete in the forms.
