Advantech is an engineered wood alternative to traditional plywood. An enhanced OSB (oriented strand board) panel made of wood strands mixed with a technologically advanced resin, Advantech brings building advantages to engineered wood decking, roof sheathing, and walls. Advantech panels were designed to compete with plywood in terms of strength, stiffness, and durability. Advantech has more dimensional stability than other OSB panels or plywood because it resists swelling and moisture buildup. Advantech panels stay square, maintain their stiffness, and retain firm edges. Advantech even manufactures a tongue and groove panel that is fitted to maintain the 1/8-inch gap required for expansion. In all other cases the 1/8-inch gap should be maintained between panels to avoid ridges and buckling.

Carpenters install Advantech Panels at the Quechee Lakes project.
Advantech panels are more resistant to moisture than OSB and plywood products, have resin coated edges, and are well suited to roof, floor, and wall work that may be temporarily exposed to moist or wet conditions. The manufacturer stresses, however, that Advantech panels are not intended for exposure to the elements. Advantech's pre-sanded faces may be varnished, stained, or painted. Because the strands are bonded with phenolic resin, the amount of formaldehyde emitted by Advantech is nonexistent or negligible, prompting the Department of Housing and Urban Development to exempt this product from further emissions testing. Advantech panels may be applied to prepared concrete slabs or joist systems as a base floor. Advantech panels make a great underlayment for wood floors and, with a proper subfloor on top, are well suited to vinyl or tile.
