At Home with...David Alan Basche

For actors David Alan Basche and his wife, Alysia Reiner, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, especially when it came to buying their new home. They knew that as soon as they saw the Harlem, N.Y., townhome that it was perfect for them—even though others thought the couple had lost their minds. Even Reiner’s own grandparents questioned the couple’s judgment when they bought the building that had been foreclosed on years ago, had been abandoned since and was boarded up with wood and cinderblocks to prevent vagrants from entering. The home’s interior was trashed with six-foot high piles of garbage and numerous broken crack vials. But the couple saw its beauty when no one else did, and they purchased it in April 2005. “This five-story townhouse was built back in 1909 as a single family home and later split into four apartments,” says Basche. “It has a brick façade that we kept intact. We restored the peaked roof and the half-moon windows kept the integrity of the building.” Raised in Manhattan, Reiner wanted to return to her roots and the home made it convenient for Basche to stay close to the filming of Lipstick Jungle. Office The neighborhood, which has been enjoying a renaissance over the last few years, is exactly what the couple wanted, as well—although it’s far from the hills of Hollywood and quite opposite of where successful actors are expected to live. “It’s in a really vibrant community and chic neighborhood filled with art galleries, family restaurants and small businesses,” explains Basche. Currently, Basche does double-duty as Debra Messing’s conceited, sleazy Living room to kitchen ex-husband on the USA Network series The Starter Wife and as hard-nosed Mike Harness on NBC’s Lipstick Jungle. His extensive Hollywood credits also include roles on the television shows Frasier, Rescue Me, CSI: Miami and Law & Order and in the films War of the Worlds and Full Frontal, among others. Reiner also has a role on The Starter Wife and her latest film, The Vicious Kind, is due in theaters soon.
