To complete the deck at the Medford Massachusetts colonial a BrattleWorks double pergola was chosen. The pergola not only offered a look of elegance and a degree of shading but also a structure for growing vines.

The pergola started with BrattleWorks 5-inch-square by 84-inch-high sleeved posts that were slid over 3-1/2-inch-square by 48-inch solid posts attached to the framing of the deck. Joists, with dados to receive stringers were then fitted to the special pergola post cap. Finally, pre- milled stringers were fastened to the joists using stainless steel screws.

All BrattleWorks pergola components are manufactured with western red cedar. Pergola posts come either 5-inch or 7-inch square. Joists allow for openings from 4-feet to 12-feet. In Medford the design called for both 6-foot and 7-foot pergola opening. Stringers are on 6-inch centers thus giving one pergola 14 stringers and the other 16.
