New York-based design and style icon B. Smith, roller brush and foam stamp in hand, works her magic in one of the girls' bedroom.

Here are B. Smith's step by step directions for Decorative Wall Stamping and Striping.

Supplies needed:
- Latex paint for base wall coat
- Acrylic craft paints for stamps
- Paint tray
- Paper plates for stamps for stamps
- Measuring stick to act as guide
- Roller brush to create stripes
- Small roller brush to apply paint to stamps
- Stamp design of your choice

Steps:
1) Look over wall for any nicks or holes. Spackle to fill if necessary.

2) Measure approximately three quarters of the way down on the wall, to determine where the "chair rail" line should be. With a light pencil and a level, measure this area all the way around the room. This way, the top three quarters will be painted a solid latex color of your choice and the lower third will be used for the application of the decorative technique. Measure the room again, this time three inches up from the chair rail line. Mark the line with painters' tape. You can fill this area with a band of coordinating color or apply molding.

3) B. likes to work with latex or waterbased paints, because they are easier to clean up and dry faster!

4) To create the stripes on your wall, select a 3" or 4" roller brush - depending on how wide you would like the stripes to be. You may want to use a yardstick as a guide to roll your brush along the side.

5) Use a piece of cardboard about 3 inches wide (or wider if you want) to act as a "spacer" between the stripes.

6) Select a stamp design at your local craft or art supply store. Look for stamps that are fairly simple in design (we used hearts) and that are made out of foam rubber. These are lightweight and will take the paint well.

7) Apply the paint to the stamp with a small roller brush to ensure an even coat. Blot off some paint before applying the stamp directly to the wall. You can do this on a paper plate. Designer Tip: You may want to make some xeroxes of your stamps and tape them on the wall to determine their placement in advance.

8) Let dry for a few hours and enjoy!
