To frame the exterior views from the dining area in the Quechee Lakes farmhouse, two banks of four double-hung window meet at the room's corner. Bob Ryley, Home Again's resident carpenter, has these tips completing the window's finish trim:
Instead of putting finish trim around each individual window, treat the entire bank of windows as a single unit with one windowsill and one header.
Always attach the windowsill and the header first. It is much easier to cut the individual vertical pieces (mullions) to length with the sill and header in place.
Dry fit each piece of wood before fastening it in place. Windows are often a room's focal point, and small mistakes are easily noticed.
Finish the corner where the two windows meet with a mullion strip. It will mask any flaws in wood's edge, as well as add a nice decorative touch.
When trimming wood windows, leave a small reveal (about and eight-inch) around the window's frame. It adds yet another level of interest to the finish trim.
