Connected home technology for the Lifespan house was provided by Home Automation Inc, a national manufacturer of home automation systems and products for residential and commercial use since 1985. A home automation system coordinates the control of your security system, air and heat, lighting, and audiovisual equipment to automatically adjust to your lifestyle or preferences. It takes the place of a standard security system, but for not much more, greatly increases the value, safety, and efficiency of your home. When the security system installed in the Lifespan house is armed at night, it will turn off lights, adjust the thermostat to save energy, provide protection on the windows, and even lower the garage door if it is left open. All HAI home automation systems can be accessed and controlled over the telephone, PC, or over the Internet. They can program your lights to come on at sunset or when a car enters the driveway, have your system call or email you when your children have arrived home from school, or inform you if the fire or burglar alarm has gone off at your home. Wiring for the system includes: 2 conductor low-voltage wiring for the security system, 4 conductor wire for the keypad and various interfacing devices for security, home automation, and temperature controls, 4 twisted pair of high speed data line (Cat 5 wire), quad shielded RG-6 co-axial cable for video applications and cable modems, 4 pair 16 gauge oxygen-free (to handle the moisture in the humid Charleston climate) audio wire for speakers, and 2 pair audio wire for speakers as well.
