The kitchen, designed in a u-plan, is almost complete now. This type of kitchen is similar to a galley kitchen and creates a nice work triangle for the home owner.
The lower cabinets are installed first and the Pergo floor is laid next. This floor is butted up against the cabinets and looks just like a beautiful oak floor.
John Tasker from Aristokraft joins Bob to show how easy it is to install these cabinets. They are therma-foil cabinetsmade from a medium density fiber board which is overlayed using a bladder press method, in other words, a heat and pressure method.
A full overlay style has been chosen for this kitchen. The face frame of the cabinets is fully overlayed by the drawer and door fronts. European hinges are a nice detail that offers extra strength to the doors.
Thanks to the 3/8" engineered wood in the back, these cabinets are very simple to install. A screw can be driven in at any location from top to bottom, and no hanger bars are required. Special screws are sent with the cabinets and are recommended by Aristokraft. The SIPs system that was used for the kitchen walls is 7/16" oriented strand board eliminating any concern about hitting a stud when hanging the cabinets.
Sam Cousins, the installer, shows us how to install the cabinets. Start in the corner and make a level line around the whole kitchen. Make sure the floor is level, if not you might have to do some adjusting to the bottom of the cabinet.
Put the corner cabinet in first, then work your way around the room, being sure to leave the openings for the appliances. Holes will need to be cut for the plumbing to come through.
For the upper cabinets, pre-drill the holes and, using the screws provided, hang the cabinets along the visual lines you set. The standard height for wall cabinets is 18 inches above the counter tops. It takes only four screws to hold these well-constructed cabinets in place.
Once installed, the cabinets are a lovely addition to this simple yet functional kitchen.
