Lighting plays a crucial role in the interior design of any home. The renovated interior of Home Again's Medford, Mass. Victorian house provided an ample playground for lighting designer Markus Earley, owner of Earleylight in Providence, R.I.. Says Earley, "The expanded interior room sizes opened up more than square footage. This house has opened itself to possibilities of light. And with today's technology, it is possible to have great lighting and use energy saving products. We all need to do our part to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere—energy effective lighting is a good start."
Here, a look at a few of the techniques and products Earley used to create a well-lit, livable, and functional environment for the home's new owners.
Three glass block ceiling panels, are floodlighted from above to extend the feeling of daylight in the spaces below. This is achieved with four 70-watt Ceramic Metal Halide light sources per panel, which produce five times the light of an incandescent lamp for the same energy consumption. Ceramic Metal Halide has a warm appearance, like incandescent/halogen sources, and it has excellent color rendering quality.

In the master bathroom, luminous wall sconces at the mirror provide soft frontal lighting for grooming.

Skylights and halogen track lighting in the third floor office takes advantage of the room's A-frame shape by bouncing light off the sloped ceiling.

The kitchen utilizes two larger scale decorative glass pendant lights over the island and recessed downlights and accent lights for the perimeter work surfaces and cabinets.

The family room celebrates the openness if the room with more whimsical lighting. Two large "C" shaped monorail lighting systems support expressive, low voltage MR16 accent lights and several decorative glass pendant lights over a central table.

The living room and study use recessed wall washers and accent lights to highlight the perimeter walls, shelves and fireplaces. Logical groups of lights on separate dimmers allow flexibility in how the rooms are lighted for different activities.
