The terra cotta ceilings and other obstacles in the loft presented a unique lighting challenge. Lighting designer Markus Early, with a well thought out lighting plan explained the functionality of using track lighting. As Barry, from Driscoll Electric installed the track heads and bulbs, certain types of styles and filters were explained.
The style of fixture is not quite as important as the effect of light it produces. Par 30 lamps, which are directional are installed with several different filters. The louvre filter helps prevent glare, and a linear spread lens helps diffuse the light. The linear spread lens can turn a round beam into a oval beam which lights the wall more evenly, producing a wall washing effect.
Theatrically styled lights were used in the front entry way. The barn doors reduce the aperture and are used to shape and control the amount of light. The barn doors shape the light and are able to direct it down to showcase or accent a painting.
The flexibility of track lighting can act as an electrical distribution system. It will put light where it is needed with separate controls. Functional track heads and decorative hanging fixtures were both used on this lighting plan. Conduit was installed to accent the curved wall with fixed lights. Using the Jack system, a low voltage accent light is installed onto the transformer box. The fabulous lighting plan was the key to lighting the loft.
