As Driscoll Electric prepared to install the track lighting in the loft, Bob toured the Lightolier Tech Center in Fall River, MA with lighting designer, Markus Early. Lightolier, the inventor of track lighting, has designed a facility to showcase the qualities, functions, and applications of light. The first stop in the tech center is designed to demonstrate the qualities of light. These qualities include intensity, distribution, color, and change. Marcus showed Bob a variety of these qualities with a sphere on a stand. Next stop was the Effects Hall to demonstrate the functions of light.
The functions of light include visibility, revealing form or shape, creating composition, and atmosphere. The Effects Hall has several different wall textures that showcased the grazing technique or wall washing. To apply the qualities and functions of light, Marcus led the way to the Lightolier kitchen. The Lightolier kitchen is a room designed to showcase the qualities and functions of lighting. Marcus demonstrated task lighting, recessed lighting, uplighting and a variety of accent lighting. Bob liked the track lighting and its ability to solve so many problems.
Before heading back to the loft, Marcus advised potential remodelers that not all architects and builders are skilled in the qualities and functions of light. Hiring a lighting consultant and having a lighting plan separate from the building plan was recommended, to show where every light would be applied.
