The architect's design for the back porch called for some beefed up columns to complement the large overhang. To accomplish this Bob and Ryley built out 6x6 columns with 3/4" stock and 1 1/2" pine 1x8s and trimmed the top and base.
Starting at the back of the column, each 1x8 is lined up to the mark and nailed. The sides are next and the front 1x8 completes the column. Once all are in place and flush, they nailed in all the corners. The four caps were precut, and even though there was not any pine wide enough on the job site, Ryley improvised with some pressure treated wood.
The caps on top were glued first, on the cut and corners, with an exterior glue or an epoxy, and then nailed. The bottom caps were glued also on the 45 degree angle and then nailed.
The finished built out columns really give the back porch a sturdy solid look.
