Replacing your home's mercury thermostat with a programmable unit will rid the home of dangerous mercury and help save on heating and cooling costs.

Step 2: Remove the old thermostat.
Remove the cover of the old thermostat. It should pull away easily. Remove the screws that hold the thermostat to the base plate. Now, lift the thermostat off the base plate. Note the number of wires connected to the base plate: There will be two or four wires, depending on if the thermostat controls heat only or heating and cooling.

| Be careful not to break the glass vial on the old thermostat, as it may contain liquid mercury, a hazardous substance. Dispose of the old thermostat at a hazardous waste facility or with a heating supply company. Never throw the old thermostat in the trash. |
